Bedford Borough Council owns six sports and leisure sites and two outdoor activity centres (see links below).

Bedford has four rugby union teams: Bedford Blues, Bedford Queens, Bedford Swifts and Bedford Athletic, and, since 2004, also has a rugby league team; Bedford Tigers. Bedford Blues are currently in the second tier of English rugby, but were previously in the top division. Its Goldington Road ground holds in the region of 5,000 spectators.

Bedford is one of the largest towns in England without a fully professional football team. Its two local teams are Bedford Town FC and Bedford FC.

Rowing is a key focus for the town, with various regatta events hosted throughout the year from February to October; the Bedford Regatta is the second largest in the country.

You’ll have no problem finding somewhere to golf, as Bedfordshire has more than 200 golf courses on offer.

The area has also produced several champions of sport including Olympic rower, Tim Foster, who honed his skills on the Great Ouse; heavyweight boxer Joe Bugner, penthathlete Stephanie Cook,  runners Liz Yelling and Paula Radcliffe and not to be forgotten, Eddie ‘the Eagle’ Edwards!
